The York Emporium has taken Gold in the Producers & Makers segment of the White Rose Awards.
Ross Macdonald accepted the award: The York Emporium, part of The Upton Group, are coffee roasters and tea specialists who are ‘committed to providing with the perfect cup’. Their coffee is roasted daily in small batches at their artisan roastery in York and the speciality loose leaf teas are selected from the best estates from around the world to suit all manner of tastes.
The White Rose Awards is the largest tourism awards ceremony in the UK, in which Yorkshire ‘showcases the best and brightest it has to offer’. The standards required of winners are raised year on year as the continues to grow in importance.

The York Emporium was acquired by Upton Group in 2016. In the 5 years prior to the acquisition, the company’s turnover grew from £11,000 to almost £800,000.
Acquired by coffee enthusiasts Laurence and Philippa Beardmore in 2011, The York Emporium supplies customers throughout the UK, including independent cafes, hotels, restaurants, businesses and tourist attractions. The company also supplies wholesale buyers and individuals, who buy through its e-commerce site.
Following the acquisition, Laurence Beardmore became Commercial Director of the Upton Group and Philippa was appointed Operations Manager for The York Emporium.
‘The acquisition brought together two successful family businesses with a similar ethos to create a broader-based company which will benefit all our staff and current and prospective customers’, Upton Group managing director Ross MacDonald told PV at the time.
Laurence Beardmore agreed: “We’d grown tremendously in the last five years before the deal, but we’d gone about as far as we could within our existing structure. The acquisition gave us a platform to reach the next level and allowed us to remain part of a family business rather than an impersonal corporate body.’
