Deposit Return Scheme

Deposit Return Scheme: Time is Running Out to Get Your Voice Heard.

Deposit Return Scheme and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) consultations will stop taking responses on 4 June 2021.

With the deadline now less than a month away, the AVA is urging its members to act quickly and submit Deposit Return Scheme consultation responses directly to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) either online, via email or in writing. To encourage submissions, the AVA will provide, to all members, a suggested response that can be customised with your company details and updated with any personal insights you might have.

The name of the game in both consultations improving material re-use, encourage recycling and reducing littering, so it’s important that members voices are heard and that consequently, any legislation is achieved within a fair and financially equitable structure.

The Deposit Return Scheme proposals, due for implementation in England, Wales and N. Ireland in 2024, suggest that where vending is the only source of ‘in scope drinks containers’, then a deposit return mechanism will not be mandatory. The DRS consultation also outlines that ‘disposable single use cups’ will not need to be included as part of the scheme, as there is a compulsory cup return strategy outlined in the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) consultation, which would be ‘more effective’.

The financial impact of any changes in legislation can have a significant effect on vending operators, so it’s absolutely vital to get involved now and have your say on an issue that will have an impact on the future of the industry. For more information on the Defra consultation and how to submit your response, click HERE

The Editor

Planet Vending’s Editor is Ian Reynolds-Young and it’s Ian’s unique writing talent that has made PV what it is today – the best read (red) vending blog in the world, and vending’s best read (reed). Ian ‘tripped and fell into vending’, in the capacity of PR executive, before launching a specialist agency, ‘reynoldscopy’, dedicated to the UK Vending business. The company continues to represent the interests of many of the sector’s leading brands.

‘It’s all about telling stories’, he says. ‘We want to make every visit to PV a rewarding experience. By celebrating the achievements of the UK’s operating companies, we’re on a mission to debunk the idea that vending is retailing’s poor relation.’
