It seems it was ‘much ado about nothing…’
Apparently the PM, (who we were told was ‘warming to the idea of a sugar tax of up to 20%’), has now rejected the idea in favour of forcing companies to reformulate their products to reduce sugar content, with the threat of a future tax looming over them like the sword of Damocles, according to the FT today.
We think our pals at Cost Sector Catering got it right when they wrote, ‘the food and drink industry, which has strongly opposed the introduction of a Sugar Tax, may breathe a sigh of relief at the news. Industry giants such as Coca Cola and Kellogg’s have, however, agreed to launch their own voluntary cuts to sugar content in their products in a bid to avoid further Government intervention.’
Are you breathing a sigh of relief, or is this an opportunity missed in the fight against obesity? Let us know what you think.
